EU firms will make their own call on Iran business - Macron

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron called up United States President Donald Trump to say he's very anxious about tensions in the Middle East after Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear accord.

Macron, voicing understanding for big companies anxious to protect their US sales, said France backed proposals by the European Commission to protect and compensate European companies that might be hit by USA sanctions for trading with Iran.

The trio will "present their assessment of the situation" to their colleagues over dinner, it was reported.

Total on Wednesday said it might quit a multi-billion-dollar gas project unless it secured a waiver from US sanctions. He also vowed to reinstate the sanctions against Iran that were lifted as a result of the agreement.

At dinner talks in the Bulgarian capital, European Union leaders were briefed on possible incentives to keep Tehran in the nuclear agreement despite the US pulling out. "We promised to take political measures allowing our enterprises to remain in Iran", TASS cited Macron as saying.

Major European countries share Trump's concerns but argue that the nuclear deal is the best way to stop the increasingly influential regional power from obtaining an atomic weapon.

'This agreement is everything other than ideal, but Iran is, according to all the knowledge of the global nuclear authorities, sticking to the commitments of the agreement'.

Maersk Chief Executive Soren Skou said: "With the sanctions the Americans are to impose, you can't do business in Iran if you also have business in the USA, and we have that on a large scale".

Earlier, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said that: "At this point, we have to replace the United States, which as an global actor has lost vigor, and because of it, in the long term, influence". Macron strongly opposes Trump's pullout from the 2015 global deal curbing Iran's nuclear activities.
