Dilip Vengsarkar: Virat Kohli will boss England

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar sees no wrong in Indian captain Virat Kohli's choice of opting to play county cricket for Surrey over the Afghanistan Test match. "For them playing in India against Afghanistan makes no sense", said the stylish former batsman who had struck three back-to-back centuries at Lord's on three tours to England.

The Mumbai stalwart goes on to add that even Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara should not have been forced to play the one off Afghanistan test match in the middle of his county stint; in what would be very different conditions to England. He fell to Stuart Broad (twice), Jimmy Anderson (four times), Chris Jordan (twice), Liam Plunkett and Moeen Ali (once each).

The former Australian global cricketer and World Cup winning captain Michael Clarke has said he is surprised by the decision of the Indian skipper Virat Kohli to miss the historic Test Match against Afghanistan. "He will get time to acclimatise to the conditions, especially since the last tour wasn't exactly a very good tour for him".

"If I was a selector, I would've asked (Cheteshwar) Pujara also to stay back and play county cricket because these are the guys who're going to play in England. And if there's one ever made, I feel it will be more of a real account of my life than a biopic", said the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper. "So, he would've got more chances to play in England, scored runs and got into the groove".

"I still feel Virat can get what he wants in terms of coming and playing some games for Surrey and then I would like to see him fly back and play the Test match", he was quoted as saying by The Statesman.

Vengsarkar, though, is pleased with the itinerary scheduled in England. The full team will get sufficient time to get acclimatised. He added that the lack of warm-up games affected the previous England tour and the South Africa tour earlier this year. "If anything she has only motivated and given me more positivity (sic)", Kohli had written during India's World T20 campaign in 2016. Of course, the England tour will be "the tour" for him. "I am sure he will do well", Vengsarkar said on the sidelines of the announcement of the National School Cricket League of which he is the mentor. "The England tour is nicely scheduled".

The 1983 World Cup winning cricketer said, "Kohli is the best batsman in the world at the moment and in the last four years he has established himself as No 1".

"I expect a lot from the Indian team now". It's a good thing for Indian cricket. We have a balanced team.

"I think the fact that we have 12 English players (in the IPL) is a great thing for English cricket", he said. While he was generous in praise for Pant, Vengsarkar said that he is a big fan of Dinesh Karthik.
