Deadpool 2: The best R-rated family film of 2018

Deadpool vs. Stephen Colbert

The wit, sarcasm and charisma of Deadpool the comic character cleanly couples with the dynamic personality of Ryan Reynolds the movie star.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool or Wade Wilson in "Deadpool 2". A mission involving a mutant kid named Russell (Julian Dennison) goes horribly wrong and leaves Deadpool in dire straits.

Last time around Deadpool told the audience that the budget was too small to afford proper X-Men.

"I don't know if she knows she's in a Taylor Swift song".

And yes, most everyone from the first movie is back, including the CG Colossus (voiced once again by Stefan Kapicic), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Blind Al (Leslie Uggams).

So it is fair to say that Deadpool 2 is bolder than before. "I don't know why you would put your kid in show business".

Deadpool 2 is now in cinemas and there will no doubt be thousands of people rushing to their local popcorn-producing mega lounge to watch the movie. While Deadpool will have led a pair of superhero movies himself by the time we see an X-Force movie, Reynolds says putting Wade Wilson in a team will be good, as it means the movie doesn't need to be about Deadpool, so the story has more freedom. The wise-cracking actor is doing the media rounds and dropping nuggets of comedic gold everywhere he goes, and quite frankly I am lapping it all up, particularly any anecdote that involves his wife Blake Lively or their cute AF daughters, James, 3, and Inez, 19 months. The talky script (cowritten by Reynolds) deploys plot elements only to serve the film's more noble objective of making us laugh. Cable (Josh Brolin) has come from the future to kill Firefist because apparently he grows up to be a murderer and kills his family. Well, rejoice, for Deadpool 2 meets most of the expectations, save for going bigger (let's talk about that later).

Also, kudos to director David Deitch for finding increasingly interesting ways to visualize the concept of luck, which contrary to Deadpool's repeated assertions to the contrary is definitely a superpower.

There are a few "blink and you miss them" cameos to be on the lookout for, as well as a brilliant mid-credits scene you should really stay for, but there is no post-credits scene so don't wait up for that. The first film broke the opening weekend record for the highest grossing R-rated film with a $132 million USA debut.

The screenplay written by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick incorporates all the things we loved about the first movie but dials it up.

Deadpool 2 is now playing in cinemas everywhere.
