Crowds turn out for Alfie Evans' final farewell

Alfie Evans funeral Goodison Park

He died shortly before what would have been his second birthday after being treated for a degenerative brain disease.

Toy soldiers and the Everton club motif were nestled beside his tiny coffin, while the lead two hearses carried floral wreaths spelling out the words "Warrior", "Our Hero", "Son", "Nephew", "Grandson" and "Blue".

The funeral cortege of Alfie Evans goes past Everton's Goodison Park ground in Liverpool.

Alfie, who was born in May 2016, was first admitted to Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital in December of that year after suffering seizures, and had been a patient ever since.

Alfie's family requested that the occasion remains private, but made arrangements for the public to pay their respects on the route of his funeral cortege.

Alfie became the subject of a huge legal and ethical battle after courts ruled that doctors should stop his treatment for a neurological condition.

The parents of a seriously ill little boy from Liverpool are fighting a court ruling allowing medics to withdraw his life support.

The vigil will be held in Springfield Park, next to Alder Hey Children's Hospital where Alfie died.

His parents have thanked the community for their support but are asking for privacy during the funeral. Kate James and Tom Evans said their son's death had left them "heartbroken".

His parents had fought a bitter battle with the hospital treating him, and the High Court, to allow them to take him overseas for further medical treatment. His parents fought in court to take him to the Vatican children's hospital and gained support from the pope.
