Tom Wolfe novelist and pioneer of New Journalism dies at 87

Wolfe's agent Lynn Nesbit told USA media the writer died on Monday in a Manhattan hospital, where he was being treated for an infection.

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Wolfe attended private schools and then Washington and Lee University, where he helped to found the litary magazine Shenandoah.

A gifted amateur baseball player, Wolfe tried out in 1952 for the then-New York Giants, but he ended up getting cut and eventually landed at Yale University, where he pursued a graduate degree in American studies.

"A cult is a religion with no political power".

The prolific author was known for both his fiction and nonfiction works and rose to fame for his essays and bold arguments coupled with rigorous reporting, climaxing with the book "The Right Stuff" in 1979.

"I probably have given that impression in the past, but I didn't", he said.

In 1968 he published two bestsellers on the same day: "The Pump House Gang", made up of more articles about life in the Sixties, and "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test", a non-fiction story about the hippie era. He went on to write "The Right Stuff" about the Mercury space program.

"Saddened to hear of Tom Wolfe's passing".

His most famous work was his bestseller "Bonfire of the Vanities" - an epic satire on social class, ambition, racism, politics and greed in 1980s NY.

Tom Wolfe is survived by his wife, Shelia, and his children, Alexandra and Thomas.
