Australia jobless rate ticked higher in April, job additions beat estimates

Employment conditions at record high

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that the country's monthly unemployment rate has hovered at the 5.5% level since May past year.

The ANCYL made the call after Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) released figures on Tuesday which showed that South Africa's official unemployment rate remains at 32.4 percent amongst 15-34 working youth age group, the highest youth unemployment rate in the world, to be followed by Greece (25.2 percent) and Spain (22.2 percent).

Nationally, the jobless rate was steady at 5.6 per cent despite some positive signs in the jobs market.

The Australian dollar has been boosted by the data, trading at 75.27 United States cents at 1200 AEST, up from 75.18 U.S. cents just prior to the release.

Participation rate increased by less than 0.1 pts to 65.7%.

The number of hours worked rose by 1.1 per cent in April and was up 5.4 per cent over the year, the strongest annual gain in 18 years.

"The labour market was always set to cool after such a strong 2017", she said.

The RBA last cut rates to a record low 1.5 percent in August 2016 and is seen likely to keep policy unchanged for another year as it awaits a pick up in wage growth and consumer prices.

Ms Hunter expected jobs growth to remain subdued for at least the rest of 2018, given weak retail figures in the March quarter and the coming downturn in residential construction.

Business is hiring more workers in Western Australia.

Australia's youth unemployment rate rose 0.2 per cent, on a seasonally adjusted basis, to 12.6 per cent.

"The labour force participation rate was the highest it has been since the series began in 1978", Australian Bureau of Statistics chief economist Bruce Hockman said.
