Two former club captains Mikel Arteta and Vieira, now head coach at New York City in the Major Soccer League, are among the favourites for the role.

Arsenal are expected to begin the interview process this week in the hope a new manager will be in place before the start of the World Cup on June 14.

It was revealed earlier this month that Wenger would be stepping down at the end of the season, after 22 years at the club.

Neil Banfield - a first-team coach for two decades - and Boro Primorac are also on their way out at Arsenal, who continue to be linked with both Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri and Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta.

He said: 'I have seen the shortlist: Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Mikel Arteta - why not?

'With Vieira - and this is only my opinion - yes.

Patrick Vieira is "ready to manage Arsenal", according to his former Gunners team-mate Robert Pires. Not just because he's my friend.

Carzorla, who has is out of contract in the summer, hasn't kicked a ball in anger since a 3-2 win over Swansea City in October 2016 due to injury but it appears Arteta is keen on keeping his former teammate at Arsenal. Now in charge of New York City, Vieira is said to be mystified over whether he has ever been under serious consideration.

Arsenal's head of football relations Raul Sanllehi is believed to favour a more experienced replacement for Wenger but Gazidis is confident of overcoming his reservations.
