A surprise announcement came this morning at The CW's upfront presentation in NY that this year's Arrowverse crossover will feature Batwoman - note that it's not Batgirl, but rather the "Kate Kane" version introduced in the 52 comic book series in 2005 - and Gotham City will also be introduced to the Arrowverse story! The Arrow actor had been teasing some big news, but this is more than anyone could have predicted.

The CW didn't offer many details, but Pedowitz added that "We are adding the city of Gotham into the Arrowverse". She's got a huge following right now, and made history when she became one of DC's first openly gay characters. "We will be fighting alongside Batwoman".

On Wednesday, Amell got fans buzzing when he nearly spilled the beans early: "I'm gonna be in NY on Thursday for the CW's upfronts".

Then, as the reveal came, a Batwoman spotlight was shown shining into the sky.

Finally, we'll just say it: Dare we to hope that with Batwoman's appearance, we see the return of Floriana Lima's Supergirl character Maggie Sawyer in the crossover?

With such a long career in comics, Batwoman will certainly make a great addition to the Arrowverse and could even be a gateway into Gotham City itself.

Stephen Amell confirms this year's #Arrowverse crossover will involve a new superhero, Batwoman.

But let's talk about Batwoman herself. While we don't know yet who will play the iconic character, we're holding out hope that Riverdale's Madelaine Petsch will be in the mix to take on the part.
