Flood watch in effect for South Florida as Subtropical Storm Alberto heads north

"As we continue to monitor Subtropical Storm Alberto's northward path toward Florida, it is critically important that all Florida counties have every available resource to keep families safe and prepare for the torrential rain and severe flooding this storm will bring".

Projected to make landfall sometime Monday along the Florida panhandle, Alberto is already impacting the coastal and inland areas with rain as the first bands enter southeast Alabama.

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for ...

Tropical storm force winds will meet land by about 8 p.m. Sunday and the storm itself is likely to make landfall Monday morning.

It is forecast to drop as much as 30cm (12in) of rain across MS to western Georgia and to bring storm swells of about 60-120cm (2-4ft) to low-lying areas.

U.S. forecasters followed suit by issuing a tropical storm watch for parts of the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle southwest of Tallahassee to the New Orleans metropolitan area.

Subtropical Storm Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season that starts June 1 - prompted Florida, Alabama and MS to launch emergency preparations Saturday.

Off the East Coast, there is a potential for high winds and wave heights as Alberto rolls through.

In its 2 p.m. advisory the National Hurricane Center reported Alberto's winds had remained at 50 miles per hour, the barometric pressure was at 994mb and Alberto appeared to be transitioning from subtropical to tropical.

Moisture from Subtropical Storm Alberto is bringing in the rain, putting a damper on the Memorial Holiday weekend.

The water could reach two to four feet high with the deepest water expected along the immediate coast.

If the current track holds - and it could shift again - Alabama's coastal areas will end up on the west side of the center of circulation, which is a good thing if you have to deal with a tropical system.

"We're talking eight to 12 inches of rain this weekend, and storm surges on the Gulf Coast".

On the forecast track, the center of Alberto will move over the northern Gulf of Mexico Sunday night and approach the northern Gulf Coast in the warning area on Monday. By late Tuesday, the outer bands associated with Alberto will begin moving through the Middle Tennessee.
