United Nations chief: Syria tensions 'threaten full-blown military escalation

Chemical Attacks in Syria UN Council Must Prevent Syria'Spiralling Out of Control, Says Antonio Guterres

As President Donald Trump ponders retaliatory military action in Syria, his envoy to the United Nations on Friday laid out a forceful argument Friday for reining in the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

As chemical weapons experts arrive in Syria to investigate, Moscow claims the alleged gas attack by government forces in Douma last Saturday was a fake, saying Britain was involved in staging these scenes.

The UN Security Council is now holding an emergency session on Syria at Russia's request on Friday.

"But should the United States and our allies decide to act in Syria, it will be in defense of a principle on which we all agree".

Haley also said that Russian Federation used its veto power to protect the Assad regime and prevented the punishment of those who use chemical weapons in Syria. More than 40 people, including children, were reported killed.

While making the case for military action, the United States envoy cautioned that "you don't rush decisions like this". USA officials have yet to determine precisely what was used, but suspect that a banned nerve agent like sarin was mixed with chlorine.

"France will shoulder its responsibility to end an intolerable threat to our collective security", said French Ambassador Francois Delattre, who called for an end to the "chemical weapons escalation in Syria". "This is not the first, second, third or 49th time" Assad has used chemical weapons against his people, but the 50th incident since the civil war in Syria started in 2011, she said.

"We will not sacrifice the worldwide order we have collectively built to the Russian desire to protect its ally at all costs", said Ambassador Karen Pierce.

The arguments put forward by the three allies were dismissed by Russian Federation as a pretext to advance the West's goal of overthrowing Assad and keeping Moscow's influence in check.

The ambassador urged Britain, France and the United States "not to bring the world to such a risky threshold".

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres said at the session that the worsening situation in the Middle East is threatening worldwide peace and security. He added that Washington seems determined to take military action in Syria and this is risky.

"We continue to observe unsafe military preparations for an illegal act of force against a sovereign state, in what would constitute a breach of worldwide law", said Vasily Nebenzya, Russian Ambassador to the UN.
