The BBC said May was ready to give the go-ahead for Britain to take part in action led by the US without seeking prior approval from parliament, and the Financial Times said the cabinet had agreed to this. "The opposition does not operate helicopters or use barrel bombs".

"Further UK military intervention in Syria's appalling multi-sided war risks escalating an already devastating conflict", he said.

Labour MP Kevin Brennan wrote: "Parliamentary approval should have been sought".

"This is not about intervening in a civil war".

Russian Federation has warned the West against attacking its Syrian ally, which is also supported by Iran, and says there was no chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma.

"The UK is permitted under worldwide law, on an exceptional basis, to take measures in order to alleviate overwhelming humanitarian suffering", the statement said.

The UK has begun air strikes against Syrian chemical weapons sites.

May said she would address parliament on Monday about the strikes.

The group said it "strongly condemned" the action and accused May of "sanctioning killing" at Trump's behest.

As well as facing MPs' questions, she will also take the unusual step of calling an urgent debate - although this is expected to fall far short of an explicit vote on the military action demanded by some in the Commons.

But after the Conservatives entered office in 2010, the government suggested that since the 2003 vote on Iraq, a convention had emerged that MPs should have a say, except in cases of emergency.

Parliament voted down British military action against Assad's government in 2013, in an embarrassment for May's predecessor, David Cameron.

The Chairman of the United States Army Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford, however, said he was not aware that any missiles were intercepted, adding that the military has yet to assess the operational data.

Mr Johnson, speaking at a summit of European Union foreign ministers, stressed it was "not an attempt to change the tide of the war in Syria or to have regime change" and "the Syrian war in many ways will go on in its disgusting, miserable way". The strikes at 0100 GMT were 15 miles (24 kilometres) west of Homs.

Air strikes by Britain, France and the United States in Syria sent a "clear message" against the use of chemical weapons, British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday.

"This action risks not just further escalating the civil war in Syria but also a unsafe escalation of global tensions", said the leader of the left-wing Scottish National Party, the third-biggest force in the British parliament.

A YouGov poll for The Times newspaper this week indicated that only a fifth of voters believed that Britain should launch attacks on Syrian military targets and more than two-fifths opposed action.
