Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, indicated the sanctions would be aimed at sending a message to Russian Federation, which she said has blocked six attempts by the UN Security Council to make it easier to investigate the use of chemical weapons.

Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie, director of the Joint Staff, said, "I think the words crippled and degraded are good words". "The global community will not allow chemical weapons to come back into our everyday life".

Haley made the remarks in an interview on CBS, saying the Treasury Department would announce the new sanctions and insisted the US has sent "a strong message" about the use of chemical weapons.

Trump tweeted "Mission Accomplished" on Saturday after U.S., French and British warplanes and ships launched more than 100 missiles almost unopposed by Syrian air defenses. And they will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons used.

His choice of words recalled a similar claim associated with President George W. Bush following the US -led invasion of Iraq. And it shouldn't just be us doing it.

Haley made clear the United States won't be pulling troops out of Syria right away, saying US involvement there "is not done".

The U.S.is not looking for war, said Haley.

"With the political and diplomatic actions that we're taking now, we wanted their friends Iran and Russian Federation to know that we meant business and that they were going to be feeling the pain from this as well", she said.

"If the Syrian regime used this poisonous gas again, the United States is locked and loaded", she warned.

French president Emmanuel Macron claimed on Sunday that his country convinced Donald Trump to keep an American presence in Syria.

"The president also wants the people in the region, our Gulf partners, to step up and do more, and he wants them to take on some of the financial responsibility of all of the military provided there in the region".

"We are seeing the ruble devalued about 10 percent over the last several weeks", he says.

One White House official explained to The Washington Post Monday morning that "there had been confusion internally about what the plan was".

"We are evaluating, but nothing to announce right now", she said. The Pentagon said it gave no explicit warning.

Reports of Trump's disagreement with Haley over new sanctions against Russia come amid a growing number of battles between the president and his administration over policy toward Putin and the Russians. In a US military action a year ago in response to a sarin gas attack, missiles took out almost 20 percent of the Syrian air force, the Pentagon said.

The White House said US troops will remain in Syria, for now, but the end-goal is still to pull out of the country.

Washington has said it had proof that Syrian forces conducted a deadly chemical weapons attack on April 7, although a visit by chemical weapons inspectors to the suspected attack site was delayed on Monday.

Haley appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and CBS' "Face the Nation".
