Togadia legacy ends, VHP gets its new worldwide president

VS Kokje

Earlier, VHP working global president Pravin Togadia had claimed that due procedure was not being followed in the election. The change at the helm is seen as the end of the dominance of Pravin Togadia, till now the global working president of the organisation.

Togadia had informally been the leader of the VHP since 2003 and was formally appointed to the post in 2011. The former Parishad chief had resigned after his close aide, Raghav Reddy, had lost VHP presidential election to retired justice V S Kokje.

Togadia's strong pro-Hindutva remarks were not in sync with Modi who was trying to reinvent himself for a larger national role. Closely associated with the RSS, Mr. Kokje had also been the president of the Bharat Vikas Parishad and the vice-president of the VHP. I was in it for 32 years.

Togadia said his indefinite hunger strike would be aimed at the welfare of Hindus and to seek construction of Ram Janmbhoomi Temple at Ayodhya, nation-wide ban on cow slaughter, enforcement of the common civil code and relocation of displaced Kashmiri Hindus, he said. "Hindus first is the mission of my life and from Tuesday, I will go on an indefinite fast in Ahmedabad for fulfilling the longstanding demands of Hindus".

"Hindus all over can clearly see through the dirty political designs in cracking the grand VHP", said Mr Togadia, who has off-late been critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership. The events in Gurugram are an attempt to bring a closure to the churn in the larger Sangh Parivar, as the complications between the BJP government at the Centre and the Sangh outfits' agendas grow.
