Three top officials of Kenya's elections body quit citing leadership failure

Weighing in on the resignation of Nkatha, Kurgat, and Mwachanya, Kieni lawmaker Kanini Kega while addressing the press in Nyeri on Monday asked Chebukati to resign on grounds that he was incompetent.

Three IEBC commissioners have resigned with immediate effect.

Mwachanya blames politicians for the commission's woes.

Chiloba was handed a three-month suspension by IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati to allow audit of the 2017 election financial processes.

"The events related to the purported vote (to suspend the CEO) have greatly shaken our already feeble confidence in the chair", IEBC Vice Chairwoman Consolata Nkatha Maina and commissioners Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat said in a statement, adding that not all of the six commissioners were present, as required, when the vote happened.

"For too long and way too many times, the commission chair chair has failed to be steady and stable hand that steers ship in hard times", they said.

The officers said whereas the commission is supposed to function as a single unit, Chebukati has created an "us versus them", "Commissioners versus Secretariat", and "Chair versus CEO" situation, reiterating that in their view a failure by any part of a unit of the organization is a failure of the entire commission.

With the three commissioners resigning and another fleeing the country past year, the two remaining commissioners and Chebukati will be unable to make decisions.

During the East African country's general election previous year the commission was at the centre of controversy and was accused by the opposition of tampering with the vote.

The commission conducted another election in October, President Uhuru Kenyatta won that vote in a landslide, after challenger Raila Odinga pulled out of the race.

Upon nullification of August 8 polls, commissioner Roselyn Akombe was first to exit the scene, citing external interference in the commission.

The resignation of the three leaves the commission technically dysfunctional with only Chebukati, and Commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye remaining put.
