The huge sum Facebook pays for Mark Zuckerberg's personal security

Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg testifies in Washington earlier this week about data breaches at the social media giant which have sparked calls for tougher rules

Just like everything else concerning Facebook, he presented this as an idealistic initiative; but questions about children form an alarming component of the broader debate on privacy and data collection. Facebook also gets data about non-users when users upload contact information.

So for those of us who have that anger, it was less than reassuring to have Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reveal in testimony before Congress that he didn't know key details of a 2011 consent decree with the Federal Trade Commission that requires Facebook to protect user privacy.

"One aspect of the data that was leaked from Facebook was personality profile data".

"This hearing will be an important opportunity to shed light on critical consumer data privacy issues and help all Americans better understand what happens to their personal information online", Committee Chairman Greg Walden and Ranking Member Frank Pallone said in a statement.

Let's look at the US & Canada market where Facebook earns the most per user because they're wealthier and have more disposable income than people in other parts of the world, and therefore command higher ad rates.

The social network would be wise to recognize at least a right to know, said Michael Froomkin, a University of Miami law professor.

Sarnecki suggests users to disable any apps on Facebook that they no longer use or trust by going to "Settings", and then "Apps and Websites".

"Coming out of the Cambridge Analytica scandal as it were, I don't think it is as sinister as the media and the congress and the senate in the United States are portraying it to be". In the meantime the company has released a tool users can use to check for themselves whether their information was passed on Cambridge Analytica. But those willing and able to pay are probably richer than the average user, so luxury businesses pay more to advertise to them, and probably spend more time browsing Facebook than the average user, so they see more of those ads. Cheap flights to Las Vegas, she gave as an example, could be offered to people when their Facebook activity indicated they were entering a manic phase and might be more easily induced to make a rash purchase. The social network could tack on extra features, but social media experts are unsure what features would compel a user fork over cash. The GDPR prohibits the collection and/or use of any personal identifying data (including IP addresses) unless the user consents, and even then, the use is limited to the objective for which the data is collected in the first place.

While we can debate on how true that actually is, it doesn't change the fact that it is happening and that it is concerning. "I agree that something needs to be done, but I don't think boycotting Facebook is the right idea, and neither is it a successful one". That means that these non-subscribers haven't a clue about what information Facebook has obtained about them.

The company said it would review all legitimate reports and respond as quickly as possible when a credible threat to user data is identified.

Still, despite the breach of privacy, some students say giving up Facebook is easier said than done. Ben Luján that the social media giant is harvesting "data of people who have not signed up for Facebook" for security reasons.
