BREAKING Rep. Blake Farenthold Resigns From Congress

Farenthold had announced in December that he would not seek reelection, but until Friday, he appeared determined to serve out his fourth term in the House.

The congressman's social media accounts were already deactivated by the time his resignation was announced.

The ethics committee said it was also looking into whether Farenthold had made inappropriate statements to other members of his staff. "I was investigated by the office of congressional ethics, and they found 6-0, there wasn't enough effort", Farenthold told his constituents via Skype call when he decided not to run again in December. Farenthold, who began serving in Congress in 2011, is the latest of several USA lawmakers who have stepped down or not sought re-election after being accused of sexual harassment.

In 2014, his former communications director, Lauren Greene, filed a lawsuit accusing him of creating a hostile work environment, gender discrimination and retaliation, court documents showed.

"Since being elected to Congress in 2010, I've worked to make government more efficient and responsive, cut government spending, repeal Obamacare, protect life and reduce the debt", his statement read in part following the announcement. "I've also been extremely successful in working with our communities on recovering from Hurricane Harvey". Farenthold pledged to reimburse the federal government but later became more circumspect about when he would do so.

He said in a statement Friday that he had sent a letter to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Republican, resigning his seat effective 5 p.m. Friday.

In Friday's video, Farenthold thanked his staff for its hard work and his family for its support while saying: "Leaving my service in the House, I'm able to look back on the entirety of my career in public service and say it was well worthwhile". I believe the people of Congressional District 27 need conservative, effective representation now more than ever, which is the primary reason I entered this race.

It was reported in December that Farenthold used 84,000 US dollars from taxpayers to settle the sexual harassment claim, which he has publicly promised to repay.
