Syria: missiles fired at air base near Homs – state TV

Air defense units of the Syrian army are repelling a missile strike on the Shayrat air base in the Homs governorate, the SANA news agency reported on Tuesday.

Syria state television has confirmed its air defences are repelling attacks in the country's Homs region.

State-run television showed images of an intercepted missile and called the attack an "aggression".

The Pentagon has denied initiating strikes or conducting any other military activity in Homs province.

Shayrat air base was targeted by US Tomahawk missiles in April previous year in a strike ordered by President Donald Trump in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun in Idlib. According to various Arabic media channels, three missiles targeted Al Dumayr airport, but they were all allegedly downed by the Syrian air defenses.

Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahond said there was "no USA military activity in that area at this time", according to The Jerusalem Post.

Up to 10 missiles were destroyed by the Syrian Armed Forces, a military source told Sputnik.

A local reporter for The Arab News said Israeli warplanes were spotted in Syrian airspace just before the missiles were reported.

Some reports pointed fingers at Israel who carried similar attacks in the past against Iranian interests directly or their proxy presence in Syria, but there was no Israeli confirmation at this time.
