US Threatens Military Action Against Syria; Russia Warns Of 'Grave' Consequences

A veto of the US draft by Russian Federation - a close ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - would be the 12th time Moscow has blocked action on Syria by the council during the country's seven-year-old conflict.

Asked whether Russia's President Vladimir Putin bore some of the responsibility for the latest attack to be blamed on his ally Bashar al-Assad's regime, Trump said: "He may, and if he does it's going to be very tough". Last week, the president told his military advisors he wants to pull the USA out of Syria within the next six months.

"We can't let atrocities like we all witnessed.we can't let that happen in our world.especially when we're able to because of the power of the United States.we're able to stop it".

Mr Trump had warned of a "big price to pay" following the reports of a poison gas attack on the Syrian town of Douma which killed dozens of people, including children.

Nebenzia, reflecting earlier warnings from President Vladimir Putin s Kremlin, said: "From what we hear now, I am afraid they are looking for a military option, which is very, very risky".

Russian Federation also asked the council to vote on a second new draft resolution on Tuesday that would specifically support sending investigators from the global chemical weapons watchdog to the site of an alleged deadly attack last Saturday.

Syria and Russian Federation blamed Israel for airstrikes on a Syrian air base earlier Monday.

The Syrian regime and its ally Russian Federation have rejected claims of a chemical attack, with President Vladimir Putin warning against any "provocation and speculation on this matter".

In a joint statement with the Syrian American Medical Society, the White Helmets said more than 500 cases were brought to medical centres "with symptoms indicative of exposure to a chemical agent".

The allegation of a chemical attack, pushed by the pro-militant sources, has been eagerly supported by the USA and other Western countries, who squarely pinned the blame for the unverified incident on Damascus.

It's believed that any US military response is unlikely to include significant numbers of ground forces. "So we're looking at that very, very strongly and very seriously".

Trump condemned Assad as an "animal" and said no options were off the table.

Rebel leaders say at least 40 people were killed when chlorine gas was dropped on the Syrian city of Douma over the weekend.

Global bodies led by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were trying to establish exactly what happened in Douma, a rebel-held town in the eastern Ghouta district.

The U.S. president later conferred with French President Emmanuel Macron, and they agreed on the need for a "firm response" to the attack, Macron's office said. The airstrikes reportedly killed 14 people, including some Iranians.

Deadly gas attack reported on Syrian rebel enclave on April 7, 2018. "However, when the investigation is meant to come at a predetermined point - that is, it was done by Assad with Putin's support - there are no grounds for a serious discussion".
