"The Israelis, well aware of the importance of the T-4 base for Iran to apply strategic military pressure on Israel, would have ample reason to strike the base hard", he told AFP.

"The Israeli attack on the T-4 airport was carried out with F-15 aircraft that fired several missiles from above Lebanese territory", state news agency SANA reported, quoting a military source. Syrian air defense systems shot down five out of eight missiles fired. The other three landed in the western part of the base.

"This is a very risky development".

At least 14 fighters, including Iranians, were killed in the strike, according to the monitoring organisation the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Forces from regime backers Russian Federation and Iran, as well as fighters from the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, are known to have a presence at T-4, said Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Monday called for a "strong and robust worldwide response" to the attack, after similar calls by Paris and Washington.

A Syrian war-monitoring group says 14 people, including Iranians, were killed in a missile attack early in the morning on an air base in central Syria.

The United Nations Security Council will debate the chemical attack in meeting in the coming hours.

The UN's chemical weapons watchdog said it had "made a preliminary analysis of the reports of the alleged use of chemical weapons immediately after they were issued". The strike took place after a deadly chemical weapons attack on Douma, near Damasus.

The base, which was used as a launching pad for counter offensive attacks against Islamic State militants who were at one point stationed close by, is near the Shayrat air base, which was targeted by USA missiles a year ago in response to a chemical weapons attack.

Russian Federation said Monday it had carried out its own probe and concluded there was no evidence.

A senior Russian lawmaker says Moscow is willing to help arrange a visit this week for experts from the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog to the site of a suspected poison gas attack in Syria.

President Donald Trump called the airstrike "mindless" and blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin as "responsible" for supporting the attack.

President Trump vowed there would be a "big price to pay" for the chemical attack but after the latest airstrike, Pentagon spokesman Christopher Sherwood said "at this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting airstrikes in Syria".

US officials to say they were weighing options to strike Syrian government targets and the Syria's state news agency initially blamed Monday's strike on the United States.

Israel has repeatedly warned it will not accept its arch-foe Iran entrenching itself militarily in Syria.

@IDFSpokesperson: "For a long time Iran and the Quds Force have been operating, with the backing of Syrian forces and the approval of the Syrian regime, from the Syrian T-4 Airbase near Tadmor".

The ministry noted that Israel's repeated acts of aggression against Syria had failed to protect the regime's partners and agents represented by terrorist groups and prevent the Syrian army from achieving gains against terrorism.

Lebanon's National News Agency on Monday said Israeli warplanes were flying near the country's border with Syria.

The Syrian government launched an air and ground assault on Douma, the last rebel-held town in the eastern Ghouta district, on Friday.

Syria is an ally to Russian Federation.
