He warned Washington that it will "bear responsibility" for any "illegal military adventure" it carries out.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has also said that Moscow will table a United Nations resolution calling for an independent inquiry into the attack in Douma.

May had earlier agreed the same thing in a call with French President Emmanuel Macron. That news caused Trump to lash out at Mueller to reporters late Monday, describing the Federal Bureau of Investigation raid as a criminal act and an "attack on our country".

The global chemical weapons watchdog said Tuesday it will "shortly" deploy a fact-finding team to the rebel-held Syrian town of Douma to probe an alleged poison gas attack.

As we've reported, Syria denies being involved in the chemical attack.

The United Nations Security Council meet and hear remarks from U.N. Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura via video broadcast, Monday April 9, 2018 at U.N. headquarters.

"We are using the veto in order to protect worldwide rule of law, peace and security, to make sure that you do not drag the Security Council into your adventures", Nebenzia said. They both blocked each other's proposals to set up independent investigations.

Twelve of the 15 council members backed the US-drafted measure, including the United Kingdom and France.

Former prime minister Tony Blair, who led Britain into war in Iraq in 2003, warned on Tuesday of further chemical weapons attacks if the Syrian government's actions were to go "unchecked".

The UN session was the latest in a series of showdowns between Russian Federation and the USA and saw harsh words exchanged between the countries.

"We could find ourselves on the threshold of some very sad and serious events", he said.

Russia's Defence Ministry said two Israeli aircraft targeted the base on Monday, firing eight missiles.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Monday accused Russian Federation of falling short on its obligations to ensure that Syria abandoned its chemical weapons capabilities. The change in travel plans is another indication Trump is leaning toward a military strike, he said.

It seems the United States and its allies may be preparing for one.

This comes after the White House abruptly announced the cancellation of US President Donald Trump's first trip to Latin America, scheduled for later this week, saying he wants to "oversee the American response to Syria".

"UK, France, U.S., Poland, Netherlands, Sweden, Kuwait, Peru and Cote d'Ivore have called an emergency meeting of UNSC".

CGTN's Mike Walter spoke with Daniel Serwer about what options are on the table in response to an alleged chemical attack in Syria.

Senior Russian figures have threatened to meet any USA strikes with a response.

He declined to comment directly on remarks by Russia's ambassador to Lebanon, who on April 10 repeated a warning from the military that any USA missiles fired at Syria would be shot down and that the launch vehicles would be targeted.

What happened in the suspected attack?

He also said that the United States supports an investigative mechanism, but has already appointed the guilty party before the investigation begins, blaming the Syrian Government.

It said this included breathing difficulties, bluish skin, mouth foaming, corneal burns and "the emission of chlorine-like odour".

Washington put forward a draft resolution Monday following alleged toxic gas use in the rebel-held town of Douma that killed at least 40 people and prompted President Donald Trump to indicate that a decision could be taken imminently on USA military action. The crisis is however to be discussed by the UN Security Council on Monday.

As part of the surrender deal, the Jaish al-Islam group that controlled the town released scores of people it had been holding.
