Russia shows 'evidence' to deny chemical attack

The UN Security Council overwhelmingly rejected a Russian resolution calling for condemnation of "aggression" by the United States, United Kingdom and France against Syria on Sunday, a vote reflecting support for the allied air strikes on Syrian chemical sites.

A potential hot war between Russia and the coalition of the United States, Britain and France might have inched closer to reality tonight, as a strong statement was issued by the Russian Ambassador to the United States of America in reponse to tonight's coalition air strikes on Syria.

The current escalation of the situation in Syria "has a destructive effect on the whole system of worldwide relations", the Kremlin said.

Putin said the USA actions in Syria made the humanitarian catastrophe worse and caused pain for civilians.

"Russia severely condemns the attack on Syria where Russian military are helping the lawful government in the fight with terrorism", the Kremlin said in a statement, its first reaction to the strikes.

Moscow may consider supplying S-300 surface to-air missile systems to Syria and "other countries", Colonel-General Sergei Rudskoi told a televised briefing on Saturday.

"In fact, it takes a very peculiar kind of uniqueness to attack Syria's capital at a time when the country has received a change for peace at last", Zaharova said, according to Russia's TASS news agency.

None of the cruise missiles launched by the US and its allies entered the zone of responsibility of the Russian air defenses, including the Tartus naval base and the Hmeymim airbase in Syria, the statement read.

"In the past year and a half Russian Federation has fully restored Syria's air defense system and continues to further upgrade it", Rudskoi said.
