Russian Ambassador to U.S. warns of 'consequences' for Syrian missile strike

Russia warns US against military action over alleged chemical attack in Syria

Russia warns US against military action over alleged chemical attack in Syria

In the wake of last weekend's gruesome attack, some US officials advocated a larger, and therefore riskier, strike than the limited action Trump ordered in April 2017, also in response to suspected chemical weapons use.

Washington has promised a "forceful" response to an alleged chemical weapons attack on Saturday that killed at least 40 people in Douma, the last rebel outpost in the Syrian capital.

The strikes came after the Assad regime was accused of carrying out a chemical attack in Syria's Douma, which killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others.

Russia's foreign minister says Moscow has received a document from a Swiss lab that analyzed the samples in the nerve agent poisoning of an ex-Russian spy, which points at a Western-designed nerve agent as a likely cause.

Konashenkov said Friday that Britain was "directly involved in the provocation", but didn't elaborate or provide evidence.

The prospect of Western military action in Syria that could lead to confrontation with Russian Federation hung over the Middle East yesterday but there was no clear sign that a United States-led attack was imminent.

Both powers vetoed each other's draft resolutions, with the Russians accusing the USA of prejudging the outcome of the investigation of the chemical weapons use in Douma district east of Damascus while the Americans said the Russians were trying to carry out the investigation their way.

Russian Federation has military forces, including air defences, in several areas of Syria to support President Bashar Assad in his long war against anti-government rebels.

The allegations of chemical weapons use in Syria seem like a front for settling scores between major powers and that was obvious in the recent tweets by U.S. President Donald Trump against Russian Federation.

US Navy destroyers have already attacked Syria in April 2017 with 59 cruise missiles destroying a handful of Syrian planes. She noted in the meeting that Russian Federation "has stopped at nothing to defend the Syrian regime's multiple uses of chemical weapons".

Overnight, US, British and French forces launched more than 100 missiles from ships and manned aircraft, targeting three of Syria's main chemical weapons facilities. "That meeting was chaired by the vice president to discuss a number of options", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

A former officer in Syria's chemical program, Adulsalam Abdulrazek, said Saturday the joint U.S., British, and French strikes hit "parts of but not the heart" of the program.

Russian Federation has described the reports of a chemical attack as a "provocation" created to justify Western intervention.

In a US military action a year ago in response to a sarin gas attack, the Pentagon said missiles took out almost 20 per cent of the Syrian air force.

Retired Admiral Vladimir Masorin said Russian Federation would sink the USS Donald Cook if it fired on Syria.

"We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences".

"Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

The strikes were seen as a middle ground between a limited and largely symbolic strike - such as last year's the USA missile attack - and a large-scale assault that either could destroy Syria's chemical weapons or could weaken Bashar Assad's grip on power.

Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Syria's neighbour Turkey, said yesterday he had spoken by telephone with Mr Trump and Mr Putin, and told both that increasing tensions in the region was not right. "Get ready, Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and smart!"

On Friday, before Trump's announcement, Tass reported that the Russian Navy was monitoring USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ships in the eastern Mediterranean.

But one major worry appeared to ease: that the coordinated attacks late Friday could have set off a direct confrontation with Syria's most powerful military partner, Russia.

Theresa May held an urgent Cabinet meeting yesterday afternoon to discuss Britain's response to what she has cast as a barbaric attack that can not go unchallenged.
