Syrian TV said three civilians were wounded in one of the US -led strikes on a military base in Homs, although the attack was aborted by derailing the incoming missile.

Britain's defence ministry said that while the effectiveness of the strike is still being analyzed, "initial indications are that the precision of the Storm Shadow weapons and meticulous target planning have resulted in a successful attack". James Mattis said at a press conference Friday night.

"This is grotesque, it is a blatant lie, it is the worst piece of fake news we've yet seen from the Russian propaganda machine", Pierce told reporters.

Russia's Foreign Ministry claims that no evidence of chemicals or deaths in the bombing area were found in its inspection.

"Intelligence agencies of a state that is now striving to spearhead a Russophobic campaign were involved in that fabrication", he said.


Mr Lavrov did not offer evidence to back up his claim.

Trump himself appeared on Thursday to cast doubt on at least the timing of any US -led military action, tweeting: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place". "History will put everything in its place, and it has already laid heavy responsibility on Washington for bloody reprisals against Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya".

Karen Pierce also labelled the Russian allegation as "grotesque", saying she wanted "to state categorically ... that Britain has no involvement and would never have any involvement in the use of a chemical weapon".

"The mechanisms and the safeguards to manage the risks of escalation that existed in the past no longer seem to be present".

Putin also called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

Lavrov said Russian Federation expects the OPCW team to quickly visit the site.

Russian Federation has been a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and has helped turn the tide of war in his favor since entering the conflict in September 2015.

Syria's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that Trump's threats to attack are "reckless" and endanger global peace and security. Responding to this warning, Moscow indicated that such an action could spark a US-Russia war.

U.S., British and French forces pounded Syria with air strikes early on Saturday in response to a poison gas attack that killed dozens of people last week, in the biggest intervention by Western powers against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The OPCW said the investigators would start work on Saturday (local time).

"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", said Moscow's United Nations ambassador Vassily Nebenzia on Thursday. Syria's civil war, which began as a popular uprising against Assad, is now in its eighth year.
