Reliance Jio planning to launch always connected PCs with Qualcomm: Report

After amassing a whopping 175 million user base in India, Jio is gearing up to cast an indelible impact in the mobile data space. After its debut in 2016, Jio has come up with smartphones and 4G feature phones, much to the dislike of the current players in the market.

Laptops with connectivity is the new idea being worked upon by Reliance Jio, which has been successful in disrupting the Indian telecom market through rock bottom pricing for data and free calls from anywhere to anywhere.

Qualcomm is now working on it confirmed Miguel Nunes, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies.

Economic Times reports Qualcomm is working closely with Reliance Jio and Reliance Retail for a 4G feature phone and always connected PCs will strengthen their brand portfolio.

"The Always Connected PC combines the connectivity and the simplicity of the smartphone with the power and creative capability of the Windows 10 PC, transforming how we work and play", said Matt Barlow, Corporate Vice President, Windows and Devices, Microsoft.

Under a project "Always connected PCs", Qualcomm is working with global laptop brands like HP, Asus and Lenovo for developing a similar device that may do away with the Wi-Fi router and make internet directly available, a la smart TVs that stream movies and serials from the internet.

The Reliance Jio 4G laptop is expected to be price tagged with between INR 35,000 and INR 40,000. Reliance Jio hasn't made any official announcement on this.

The intent to develop such a laptop is being attributed to increasing the average revenue per user (ARPU) for Reliance Jio. The Internet is the backbone of nearly every computing and smart devices. The company is apparently looking to launch a laptop with 4G SIM card support.

Reliance is also reportedly in touch with domestic manufacturer Smartron to produce Snapdragon 835-running laptops with cellular connectivity.

This could open a different segment of laptops in the country. What is being offered would be new for network providers, for OEMs and also for the users.
