The CBI is now expectedly to take the accused to Unnao for further investigation.

In a scathing order yesterday, the Allahabad High Court slammed the inaction by the Uttar Pradesh government and the state police.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar who is the alleged accused in Unnao gang-rape case, has been sent to seven-day police custody on Saturday. Victim's father died on Tuesday.

He said the failure of the state government on the law-and-order front had been completely exposed by the Unnao incident, where "a lawmaker of the ruling party was accused of rape and police were found protecting him".

On Thursday, an FIR was registered against Sengar and the UP police booked him on various charges under the IPC, including rape, kidnapping and criminal intimidation. Meanwhile, the Centre issued a notification approving the CBI probe into the case, officials said later in the evening in New Delhi.

"What is disturbing... is that the father of the prosecutrix, for no reason, came to be arrested and was in custody, where, we are informed, he was mercilessly beaten and succumbed to injuries", said the court. Those arrested include CO Kunwar Singh, SO Ashok Kumar and other police personnel.

The first FIR pertains to the alleged rape of the girl in which Sengar and a woman, Shashi Singh, have been named as the accused. The agency filed three FIRs late on Thursday over the 2017 rape and the victim's father's death in police custody.

Sources said, "The central agency made a decision to arrest the MLA when he failed to satisfactorily reply to questions during interrogation".

As he was produced before the court around 4pm, Sengar claimed he was innocent and reposed faith in the "judiciary and God".

Sengar, a four-time MLA, enjoys an enormous clout, cutting across party lines, in rural areas of Unnao district, a semi-urban area about 70 km from Lucknow. The court also observed that based on the prevailing situation, it would be compelled to say in its order that the law and order situation in UP has collapsed.

Earlier on Friday, the Allahabad High Court had told the CBI to arrest, not just detain, Sengar.
