Moscow calls on West to 'seriously consider' consequences of Syria threats

Syria has denied that it used poison gas.

And Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Monday he won't "rule out anything right now" when it comes to launching airstrikes against Assad in response to the suspected chemical weapons attacks on civilians over the weekend.

What time will May and MPs meet today to discuss Syria?

Officials and analysts in Washington say a robust, USA -led retaliatory military response is expected within days.

Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn argued recently that Parliament should be given their say on Britain's involvement in any potential military strikes in Syria.

A day after warning starkly that "missiles will be coming", Trump in another early morning tweet storm wrote: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

Between the tweets, on Wednesday afternoon, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tried repeatedly to convince reporters that Trump had not tipped his hand.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday tweeted that Russian Federation shouldn't be allied with a "Gas Killing Animal", in reference to Assad whose regime is accused of carrying out the attack on Douma, which activists and rescuers say killed at least 40 people.

Meanwhile in the U.K., Prime Minister Theresa May is convening her cabinet on Thursday morning to discuss backing the US with a military response over the alleged chemical attack.

Russian Federation has warned the West against attacking its Syrian ally, which is also supported by Iran, and says there was no chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma.

The Syrian government has denied the allegations and said the rebels were fabricating the incident to give a pretext to the U.S. and its Western allies to strike Syria.

The attack in Douma happened late on Saturday amid a resumed offensive by Syrian government forces after the collapse of a truce with the Army of Islam rebel group.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War", Trump said. "They failed at that".

A strike that hits Russian assets in Syria - even if unintentionally - could result in a unsafe game of one-upmanship, potentially dragging the US further into a conflict the president wants to leave. Any U.S. strike would probably involve the navy, given the risk to aircraft from Russian and Syrian air defences.

The USS Donald Cook, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, is within easy striking range of Syria, as is a French frigate with its own cruise missiles.

It comes nearly exactly a year after a chemical attack in the northern Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun killed dozens of people.

The Porter is also in the USA 6th Fleet area of operations, which includes the Mediterranean.

He said that Russian Federation has "the necessary means for that and the Americans and their allies know that quite well".

As tensions mount between the U.S. and Russian Federation over a possible USA strike, the Kremlin said a crisis communications link with the United States meant to avoid an accidental clash over Syria was being used by both sides.

Assad warned on April 12 that threats of Western military action "will only contribute to further destabilization in the region".

Mr Trump's decision to announce in highly inflammatory language on Twitter that missile strikes are imminent, rather than retaining an element of surprise, will raise eyebrows among military chiefs.

"Nonetheless, however big the strike package or alliance, it is unlikely to significantly affect Assad's calculus", Tobias Schneider, a research fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin, told VOA.
