It now has 900 people on the waiting list.

Allen explains there are a number of myths regarding organ donation that simply aren't true, such as doctors not working as hard to save someone's life if they find out that person is an organ donor.

The government is now looking to further improve the supply of donations by introducing an opt-out system for organ donation, meaning it will be assumed that people are willing to donate their organs unless otherwise specified. Poythress is also a member of the hospital's ethics committee, which is spearheading the campaign to raise awareness on the need for organ, eye and tissue donation.

"I want everyone out there to put their name on the donor list because you can save so many people's lives if you just do that", an emotional Susan Procack told CTV Toronto.

Those interested in registering as an organ donor can do so at the B.C. Transplant website.

"Most are waiting for a kidney", said Boger, who noted that kidneys are the human organs that are most often donated by living donors.

This is part of a trend for the organ donor agency.

And although local registration rates are higher, with 72 percent of adults in Kansas and 75 percent of adults in Missouri registered as organ donors, the demand still far exceeds the supply. "The doctors that work to save your life aren't the same people coming in that are working to save other lives by procuring organs", Allen explains.

"The only thing that gets in the way is procrastination", she said.

Doctors say Mason will need a liver transplant at some point in his life because of a rare childhood disease, Vanderhart said, and organ donations like Boulet's mean "the world" to many other families in similar positions. "And it's a gift for someone you're never going to meet".

Roman Catholic bishop Paul Mason has said plans for an opt-out system "undermine the concept of donation as a gift, and cross the line of what is a reasonable action for the state to take in relation to the individuals within it". He had made it known to his family that this was his wish, according to Langevin.
