Kevin Spacey sexual assault case under review Kevin Spacey

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office is reviewing a sexual assault case against Kevin Spacey, CBS News has confirmed. But the case might face obstacles that would make a prosecution impossible.

The sheriff's department said it began investigating the matter on December 11 past year and presented its results to the district attorney last week, five months after Spacey was sacked from Netflix political drama "House of Cards" over sexual misconduct accusations.

No other details about the allegation have been released and it's unclear whether California's statute of limitations on prosecuting criminal sexual assault will apply.

The case was presented to lawmakers last week (05Apr18) by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and is now under review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office's Sex Crimes Task Force, according to NBC.

A spokesman for Spacey did not comment on the U.S. investigation.

Starting with actor Adam Rapp last October, more than 30 men have accused Spacey of misconduct or unwanted sexual advances.

Since Rapp named Spacey (Rapp had previously discussed the incident), at least 14 men have revealed their "me too" stories. Spacey's roughly ten-year run as the artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London ended in 2015.

The theatre claimed a "cult of personality" had existed around Spacey, and his status and stardom had stopped people, in particular young actors and junior staff, from speaking out about his alleged actions.

A spokeswoman for the actor, Laura Johnson, declined to comment.

He was sacked from Netflix's House of Cards and erased from the film All The Money In The World, with the reshoots costing millions of dollars.
