Is the new God of War game open world?

God of War

Kratos has finally retuned in an all-new God of War game and he's brought with him a son, a new world and mythology to explore, and an all-new weapon for a new generation of console gamers and his arrival couldn't be more welcome.

It is really, bloody tough.

Unsurprisingly, the Nordic gods aren't best pleased and are doing what they can to remove Kratos from the equation. Now that I've had a chance to try them out, I don't think the advice was strong enough.

While the gameplay mechanics are incredibly polished and unreasonably addictive, God of War's greatest asset is its storytelling, which took me by surprise.

While God of War won't be out until next week, reviews have gone live today.

There are four to choose from and as per Sony's information, they're described as follows. They're not afraid to pull the player out of a basic gameplay loop to give them the most over-the-top shit they can. It's a great compromise because while there is some light bloat (the map constantly reminds you of missed riches and collectibles), it never reaches gargantuan radio tower levels. Players with a 4K tv can play at 4K 30fps on the Resolution Mode. We've tuned it to deliver a balanced, challenging playthrough. While not a fully open world game, there's still quite a lot of spaces to venture into for a God of War game.

The progression system is very stratified and allows you to effectively develop the combat system, which evolves during the advancement and makes the battles more tactical and elaborate. Along for every step of the adventure is his young son, Atreus, and both characters start the game grieving in different ways over their shared loss: Faye, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother. I absolutely adored Bloodborne and am frothing at the mouth to get my hands on Dark Souls Remastered, but the Give me God of War difficulty absolutely broke me. I'll be the first to admit that I was wary of the whole familial angle, but Atreus, at his worst at the absolute start of the tale, is merely a smartass. Sure, enemies were killing me fairly easily and I'd have to repeat a couple of checkpoints, but it wasn't long until I found myself barely able to progress. It reportedly takes roughly 25 hours to finish.

But I was so, so wrong. Deep down, we all probably knew that God of War would be returning one day, but few of us probably expected to return like this. So, combining your projectile abilities with keenly timed shield parries and deft dodges makes God of War's combat shine brightly. They'll flank you and take you on in pairs. This isn't the Kratos you remember - and that's what makes it work so well. Even having spent over a dozen hours completing the campaign, there are still dozens of boxes on my quest log that I have yet to check (and even more I have yet to discover). God of War does a good job of teasing you with these blocked areas, encouraging re-exploration between quests. Where Kratos was often darting around rooms filled with monsters in his past life, swinging the Blades of Chaos around and striking everything in sight, the aging god actually has to consider each individual opponent in the new God of War. That's not to say that the game won't run on a regular PS4, but getting that 4K functionality out of God of War on PS4 Pro was important to many people.

I opted for the latter. Calling back your axe is very cool at first and even offers an additional layer of strategy (it's incorporated into many puzzles), but it does get old.

Scan reviews for God of War, and you'll encounter the word "masterpiece" a lot. His history with the Greek gods is very much a part of the character and plays into the central dynamic of the game built around Kratos' son Atreus and the plot.

Dave Smith/Business Insider The new "God of War" game, which launches as a PlayStation 4 exclusive on April 20, is one of the best-looking games ever made. According to The Washington Post, there have been a total of six "God of War" titles released over the course of seven years.
