Srikanth, who now has 76,895 points, clinched the top spot after Axelsen lost at least 1660 points because he could not defend his Malaysian Open title because of scheduling issues.

He is not the first Indian to become the world's best, with Saina Nehwal topping the women's chart in 2015.

Srikanth, coached by Gopichand, is now the top seed at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018. This will help Srikanth become more relaxed.

Premier Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth heaped praise on his coach Pullela Gopichand to guide his through his career after he clinched the top spot in the BWF men's ranking. Whatever happens from here, he will always know that he was ranked as the best in the world - that he has accomplished that goal. Here is the list of his title-winning achievements a year ago. He defeated Sri Lanka's Niluka Karunaratne 2-0 (21-10, 21-10) to reach the quarterfinals on April 12. The Commonwealth Games is on, and this year also holds the Asian Games. A meeting transpired between the future coach and protege, and the two Kidambi brothers eventually joined the Gopichand Academy.

Gold Coast: Star Indian shuttlers Kidambi Srikanth and H.S.Prannoy sailed into the quarter-finals of men's singles with easy wins in their respective round of 16 encounters at the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Thursday.

Earlier, Srikanth rose to world number 1 in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings.

The Andhra Pradesh player, who secured the World No. 2 ranking in November, won four Super Series titles - Indonesia, Australia, Denmark and France previous year.

"This feat by Srikanth, coming midway through the singles competitions at the CWG, should definitely inspire not just him but also the other players to raise the bar as it augurs well for Indian badminton", said Gopi. Srikanth kept the pressure on Lee Chong once he got off to a good start. I remember we used to lose to teams like Canada, England.
