IMD forecasts a normal monsoon in 2018

Meteorology Department warns of thunder rain and strong wind

As per historical data of the past 50 years, the long-period average (LPA) rainfall - between June and September - is 89cm. If the average rainfall is below 90 per cent of LPA, the Monsoon is termed "deficient".

Monsoon rains, the lifeblood of the country's $2 trillion economy, are expected to be 97 per cent of a long-term average, K J Ramesh, IMD's director general, told a news conference.

Skymet said the monsoon this year could be 100 percent of the long period average (LPA) with a model error of plus and minus 5 percent.

Ramesh said about the nation that the country does not face lacking rainfall throughout monsoon season on this 2019. It also predicted that the rain showers would be evenly distributed across the country.

The IMD, meanwhile, said it would be able to forecast a clearer picture of the Monsoon, which normally extends from June 1 to September 30, only in June.

Sending a positive signal to farm sector and overall economy, the country's national weather forecaster - India Meteorological Department (IMD) - on Monday predicted "normal" monsoon rains during June-September period. India had 95 per cent of the LPA rainfall previous year - as against the first forecast of 96 per cent of the LPA (with an error margin of +/- 5 per cent).

However, the monsoon can be affected by the El Niño conditions.

On April 4, private weather forecast agency Skymet Weather had released similar forecast that the four-month long Southwest Monsoon which gives about 70 percent of India's annual rainfall, would be normal.

This is the third uninterrupted year when the IMD forecasted the normal monsoon rains in the nation. India had faced deficient rains during monsoon season in 2015 and 2014, making both these years drought years.
