House Speaker Paul Ryan not running for re-election, sources say

House Speaker Paul Ryan will not run for reelection, according to an Associated Press report April 11 and an early report from Axios. With Republicans bracing for heavy losses in the upcoming midterms, Ryan has faced lingering questions about his future and whether he would stay in Congress to lead a slimmer Republican majority or the minority.

Ryan, R-Wis., told colleagues Wednesday that he will not seek reelection this year, ending a almost 20-year tenure in Congress and adding further uncertainty about whether embattled Republicans can maintain control of the House.

Two people with knowledge of the Wisconsin lawmaker's thinking said Ryan has decided against seeking another term.

A spokesman for Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan says he will serve out his term before retiring in January. He said Ryan is "ready to devote more of his time to being a husband and a father".

Ryan was elected by his colleagues in 2015 to replace John Boehner as speaker following Boehner's retirement. Ryan's office, however, had denied the speculation that he was leaving anytime soon.

The House speaker has scheduled a news conference for 10am local time (3pm Irish time). Ryan has served in the House of Representatives since 1999, and though sources say it's likely he would receive a re-election bid, he would have a more hard opponent to face in Democrat Randy Bryce. Ryan "recently" came to the conclusion that wasn't the best path for him, one of the sources said.

"We're getting way ahead of ourselves".

"Speaker Ryan has served our country well for decades as a thoughtful policy leader in the House", he told CNN.
