HD vinyl could hit stores next year

"High definition vinyl could be a possibility as early as 2019

Now, the promise of "high definition vinyl" has moved closer to becoming a reality. That patent described the manufacturing process to produce the records, which would feature higher audio fidelity, louder volume, and longer playing times than conventional LPs. But the fact remains that sound quality for records is all over the place and not everything lives up to the "vinyl just sounds better, man" credo your music-fiend friends crow about.

These HD records will operate exactly the same as regular records.

LPs would offer more faithful sound reproduction, the company says, thanks to more precise pressing techniques, which it says will ensure less audio information is lost.

The first step converts digital master audio data into a topographical image that represents a 3D inverted surface model of the music. Conceptually, this is not too dissimilar from how traditional vinyl is made - a needle etches grooves in rotating lacquer, which is used to create a mother copy that is then used to form the stamper. The manufacturing process will also do away with the need for the various chemicals involved in standard vinyl production. All from a disc that's compatible with existing turntable set-ups. A very limited number of vinyl plants are still running and they use decades-old technology from the 1950s.

The idea is the brainchild of Austrian start-up Rebeat Innovation which believes it has cracked the formula to create HD vinyl - all you need is some 3D mapping software and a hefty laser system. Founder and CEO Günter Loibl told Pitchfork that the first HD vinyl records could be on shelves by late 2019. Loibl said they plan to make an official appearance at the Making Vinyl conference in Detroit.
