Google's Gmail set to get a major update

Gmail’s current design as viewed on the web

Today, The Verge has obtained screenshots of the new Gmail design, now being tested inside Google and with trusted partners. Now, Google is giving us all a new Gmail design. That means you'll be able to draft and read some emails without an internet connection.

Working on an email service is hard as you have to be compatible with all sorts of email providers and email clients.

Google's Go apps - much like Facebook Lite and Twitter Lite - require less storage space on device and can function more efficiently on slower networks. But the two services remain separate from one another and Inbox may be a testing ground for new Gmail features. In addition to that, it will also let you secure emails by enabling password protection which will be automatically generated through SMS. Users can also link spreadsheets, presentations and documents to their calendar to allow other attendees to look at them.

While we usually greet the word "redesign" with a cringe, this Gmail redesign doesn't look bad at all. Sending a confidential email to a non-Google address may not work, as it prompts the viewer to log into their Google account to access the private message.

Gmail will reportedly offer a feature that will allow users to set a self-destruction time when the message they send will no longer be viewable by the recipient, according to TechCrunch.

Users are sent a link to the message.

Google did not say when its update to Gmail may go live.

With the upcoming changes, users will also able to mute their emails for a specified amount of time, like snoozing notifications on a smartphone to clear up the screen. It also makes use of Google's most advanced compression algorithm, using up to 40% less data to display search results. When viewing the confidential message, copy and paste as well as the print feature were disabled - it didn't stop our tipster from taking a screenshot of the email though.

A particular bugbear is so-called bloatware - the pre-installed apps that many consumers don't want and never use but can't uninstall. Enter your email to be subscribed to our newsletter.
