Freezing rain, big warmup in forecast as ice storm lurks

Weather Round 1 of rain on the way Thursday afternoon

Weather Round 1 of rain on the way Thursday afternoon

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Wednesday morning saying a fast-moving low pressure system will cross southern Ontario Thursday, bringing rain that may start off as freezing rain in the morning before changing to rain.

"Snow changing to freezing rain is possible for the Greater Montreal, the Outaouais and the Eastern Townships". The rain may continue into Sunday evening. Closer to the Lake Ontario shoreline, only rain is expected.

The weather misery this spring seems never-ending, with the latest forecast warning of freezing rain Thursday and a possible ice storm for the weekend. "Precipitation may start as rain, but increasing northeasterly winds will draw colder air from an arctic high pressure system to the north, resulting in a changeover to freezing rain during the day Saturday".

A much more significant freezing rain threat appears likely for many areas starting Saturday into Sunday morning as a slow-moving low pressure system approaches the area. "Layers of ice of this magnitude, combined with the wind gusts, which can reach 60 km/h, can lead to significant interruptions in the supply of electricity, caused by fallen tree branches and breaks power lines", - said meteorologists of the Ministry of environmental protection of Canada.

The national weather agency added that driving conditions could also be "hazardous" in some areas.

Some regional outdoor events will be cancelled or postponed because of the forecast.

Dufferin County, parts of Simcoe, Peel and Wellington County were hit hard April 4th when freezing rain coated everything, knocking out power to thousands.
