First Alert Weather Day Issued for Friday

Panovich: Carolinas could see severe weather Sunday

Storms will move through the region overnight Saturday, generally weakening as they move into IL. Low temperatures overnight will only bottom out in the high 50s. Ample sunshine allows for the atmosphere to warm up and gain energy for storms to form later.

Multiple fire weather and wind warnings/advisories have been issued ahead of today's very strong winds and dry air.

Flooding is listed as a lesser threat and the possibility of tornadoes or hail are listed as low. But if you have plans to be out Saturday night, be aware that temperatures will continue to fall and will likely be in the 50°s for many of us. We do see a warming trend into next week and unfortunately that will come with more wind and fire danger. This front could spark strong to severe storms across far Eastern Kansas and across Missouri. Blowing dust can reduce visibilities at times and strong gusts could create hazardous driving conditions. But the good news is at least most of our Saturday will be on the quiet and enjoyable side of things with partly sunny skies, clouds increasing through the afternoon.

Mostly clear and warm. A brief period of light snow is possible early Sunday morning, mainly north of I-70, changing back to rain before ending by early afternoon.

That "pump" also sets the stage for active severe storms west of us Friday; while we are in the low-80s with a south breeze, strong storms develop over Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana Friday afternoon and evening. Once this line of storms moves through, the threat for severe storms should diminish by late tonight.

Thunderstorms will be gradually ending from west to east with a cold frontal passage early Saturday morning, bringing an end to the severe threat.

Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 69, the weather service said.

As the weekend arrives, metro temperatures drop into the 40s and are expected to stay cool throughout the weekend.
