The registry was founded by Walter Day in1982 and has always been recognized as a reputable source of verified high scores by the gaming community and by the Guinness Book of World Records. "The use of MAME or any other emulation software for submission to these leader boards is strictly forbidden". For that reason, Twin Galaxies requires that all valid high scores be achieved on original hardware, something it's no longer convinced Mitchell did after its investigation.

"We also recognize records for First ideal score on Pac-Man and Highest score on Pac-Man".

It remains to be seen what sort of evidence Mitchell has at his disposal to prove his innocence, but this will be the continuation of an already enthralling saga. It's a decision that certainly wasn't made lightly, as Billy Mitchell is probably the most famous face in retro gaming and has been deeply involved with Twin Galaxies since its founding in the 1980s. The gamer questioned whether Mitchell earned the marks on an arcade machine.

Only time will tell what Mitchell's investigation will bring, or if Twin Galaxies and Guinness will even consider any evidence that's uncovered.

Mitchell is one of the highest-profile gamers in the world because of his list of records.

The disgraced King of Kong allegedly did wrong, and now he's working to restore his tarnished reputation. The filmed followed Kong player Steve Wiebe's attempt to beat Mitchell's record on Donkey Kong.

Mitchell has vowed to prove the allegations false, saying to Old School Gamer Magazine in a recent YouTube video, "The fact of the matter is, now there's a true professional due diligence being done to investigate things that happened as far as 35 years ago. Everything will be available", Mitchell states in the video. He reminds us that he and, presumably, his team will "show that everything was done professionally, according to the rules, according to the scoreboard, and the integrity that was set up".
