Not so long ago, Cory Doctorow noted at Boing Boing, Boehner said he was "unalterably opposed to the legalization of marijuana". Acreage Holdings is an investment company with a well-established footprint in the cannabis industry, Acreage operates in 11 states and has a diverse portfolio in the marijuana industry that includes cultivation, processing, and dispensing operations.

Weld says marijuana could be viewed as an exit drug instead of a gateway drug, a way to get off of harder painkillers that are far more addictive.

Whether in the field of medicine or the realm of business, local leaders have begun discussing the impact of legalized marijuana.

They say that there are negative consequences to federal policy which designates marijuana as a Class 1 drug - meaning it lacks accepted medical use and has a high potential to be abused. Boehner, along with Weld issued a joint statement Wednesday, saying the time has come for changes at the federal level. The company also announced that former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld has joined its advisory board.

Boehner said: "I'm convinced de-scheduling the drug is needed so we can do research, help our veterans, and reverse the opioid epidemic ravaging our communities".

Boehner has always been close to tobacco lobbyists and the cigarette companies seem likely to take over the legal weed market in time. They list consequences as impeding research and preventing the Department of Veterans Affairs from offering the drug to vets as an alternative to opioids.

If the measure ultimately passes, Delgado sees a lot of upside: Not only would Marina residents not have to travel to neighboring cities to buy cannabis products, and the city would earn revenue-the initiative calls for between 2- and 5-percent taxes on gross receipts of businesses-and also allow Marina to receive state funds for drug prevention programs that city is not now eligible. Yet the VA does not allow its doctors to recommend its usage.

Distributing lobbyist checks on the House floor was later abolished.
