MLA from Unnao who is accused of raping an 18-year-old girl when she was a minor, was on Saturday sent to seven days CBI custody by a special CBI court in Lucknow. Sengar is facing several charges under the Indian Penal Code, including sections 363 (kidnapping), 366 (kidnapping to compel a woman to marry), 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

A BJP spokesperson told The Kashmir Monitor that two BJP ministers - Lal Singh and Chandra Prakash Ganga - submitted resignations before the BJP state president.

On January 17, an eight-year-old girl was allegedly abducted, drugged, raped, tortured and killed Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district.

He was arrested the same day after the Allahabad High Court ordered said that Sengar was "influencing" the law and order machinery after pulling up the state government a day before for the delay in action against the lawmaker.

THE CBI is trying to verify the claim of BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar that he was attending a birthday function in Kanpur city at the time he was alleged to have committed rape on June 4, 2017. The victim's mother has alleged in the complaint given to the UP Police, which is now part of the CBI FIR, that the woman lured her daughter to the MLA after which he raped her.

Amid allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was purposeful in his silence on the issue, Modi said that the incidents of rape in Kathua in J&K and Unnao in Uttar Pradesh had brought humiliation to the country. "The people at the event said that we do not trust the investigation, and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry".

Cornered over supporting the accused, the BJP according to sources had sought resignations from Singh, and Ganga.

Frustrated with the alleged inaction and coercion from powerful people, the victim attempted self-immolation in front of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence on April 8 which made headlines.

The BJP General Secretary said the development would had no bearing on the alliance of two ruling parties in the state. "Therefore, keeping in mind the perception and general situation, the two BJP leaders, after holding consultations with the prime minister and other senior leaders of the party, chose to submit their resignations".
