"Can't Change Stand": Amarinder Singh On Navjot Singh Sidhu Road Rage Case

Navjot Singh Sidhu should be sent to jail: Punjab government tells Supreme Court

Known for his hard-hitting batting style, the cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu preferred to play on the back-foot on Friday - a day after his own Government bowled a googly by seeking his conviction in 30-year-old road rage case. Sidhu may have left the saffron brigade and joined the Congress, but this did not deter the Congress-led Punjab Government from sticking to its stand on his alleged involvement in the road rage case, which resulted in the death of a person.

Sidhu, now the Local Bodies and Tourism Minister in the Amarinder Singh government, was acquitted along with co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu by the trial court in September 1999. The Court is now listening final arguments in the matter and the next hearing was scheduled for April 17. A government counsel on Thursday told the Supreme Court that Sidhu's denial of being involved in the case was false.

"Whatever the Punjab government said (in court), its explanation can be given by the chief minister", he said.

Later that year, Sidhu had filed an appeal before the apex court challenging the High Court judgement. "Why the (Punjab) government lawyer did not seek increase in sentence from the Supreme Court?" The SAD accused the Congress government of "shielding" him.

"Though the government could not have taken any other stand in the apex court, other than what it had been taken in the trial and high court earlier, Sidhu deserved the court's consideration", said the Chief Minister, who is drawing flak for letting down his own minister.

Singh was beaten up by Sidhu and later fled the crime scene.

Appearing for the Punjab government, Advocate Sanram Singh Saron had said "there is not a single piece of evidence which suggests that the cause of death was cardiac arrest and not brain hemorrhage as concluded by the trial court". The man received injuries to his head, and subsequently died of brain hemorrhage.

However, the High Court reversed the verdict and held him and co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in December, 2006. It sentenced him to jail for three years.
