More sanctions against Russia to be announced on Monday- Haley

Asked Monday morning why it had taken 24 hours for the administration to walk back Haley's comments, one White House official said only that there had been confusion internally about what the plan was. As he spoke, explosions rocked Damascus.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Saturday said the military strikes on Syria were not about regime change, but about sending a clear message that the worldwide community will not stand by and tolerate the use of chemical weapons.

Also Monday, the United States is expected to unveil new sanctions against Russian Federation.

A joint United Nations-OPCW mission concluded that troops under Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons several times in recent years, including in a sarin attack a year ago in the town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed almost 100 people. Investigators from the OPCW have been blocked from entering the town of Douma to clarify the alleged poison gas attack. "They are crimes of a monster instead".

The Russians said 71 missiles were shot down by Syrian systems. A second witness said the Barzah district of Damascus had been hit in the strikes. "We know that it is now up to Bashar al-Assad on whether he's going to use chemical weapons again".

It has been more than a week since the attack in which witnesses and Western governments described helicopters dropping sarin and chlorine bombs that killed many children and women hiding from clashes between rebels and regime forces.

May called for wider diplomatic efforts on the use of chemical weapons, "including the full range of political and economic levers", but stopped short of directly calling for sanctions against countries supplying the Assad regime with chemical weapon technologies.

Syria and Russian Federation deny unleashing poison gas on April 7 during their offensive on Douma, which ended with the recapture of the town that had been the last rebel stronghold near the capital Damascus.

"To Iran and to Russian Federation, I ask, what kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"

Washington has said it had proof that Syrian forces conducted a deadly chemical weapons attack on April 7, although a visit by chemical weapons inspectors to the suspected attack site was delayed on Monday.

"We are seeing the ruble devalued about 10 percent over the last several weeks", he says.

It was not immediately clear how extensive the strikes were.

Assad told a group of visiting Russian lawmakers that the strikes were accompanied by a campaign of "lies and misinformation" against Syria and Russia in the U.N. Security Council. "In the USA administration there are specific people who it is possible to talk with". According to a statement by the French presidency, Macron called for dialogue between France and Russian Federation to "continue and intensify" to bring peace and stability to Syria.

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria", he said.

Moscow blamed the delay on the air strikes, in which the United States, France and Britain targeted what the Pentagon said were three chemical weapons facilities.
