No Echo here: Apple reportedly cut orders for its HomePod smart speaker last month

HomePod speaker sits on display during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California, US on 5 June, 2017.

Bloomberg's sources also confirmed that during its first 10 weeks on store shelves, Apple was able to capture 10 percent of smart speaker sales. However, Apple's main focus with the HomePod has been Apple Music, marketing it as more of an accessory device, rather than a new product category. However the catching up will take time and at present, Apple has reportedly lowered sales forecasts and cut some orders with Inventec Corp., according to a new report.

Similarly, the HomePod's AI-based digital assistant Siri had obvious issues handling common voice requests, which Apple appears to be addressing by ramping up Siri hiring - and adding a collection of mostly awful jokes to give the feature more personality.

According to Bloomberg, the £319 device hasn't been as popular as the tech giant had expected, despite grabbing a third of the smart speaker market when pre-orders opened at the end of January. "Even when people had the ability to hear these things", he says, "it still didn't give Apple another spike". Three weeks after launch, the HomePod slipped to about 4% of the smart speaker market.

According to statistics obtained by Bloomberg, some Apple Stores are reporting sales figures in the single digits each week for the HomePod. According to the report, Apple is "now working to rectify [that issue] with a new material", though it's unclear whether the company will fix existing units or just quietly introduce the improvement into later production runs. The product did receive raving reviews for its audio quality, however. The HomePod is said to go on sale in December during the holiday shopping season but unfortunately delayed on a year ago. Apple has said these functions will be available this year, and the latest iPhone software update in beta with app developers suggests they are in advanced testing. That's the novelty of this type of device, not really the quality of the speaker where Apple is placing it's priority.

For its part, Apple hasn't divulged sales or sales forecasts.
