Darren Opp, president of the Hawks, said a semi T-boned the players' bus.

Police said the crash took place about 28 kilometers (18 miles) north of Tisdale, Saskatchewan as the bus was traveling on highway 35.

Friday's tragedy was not the first time a Saskatchewan hockey team's bus was involved in a fatal highway crash.

Authorities told The Canadian Press that a crash occurred at about 5pm when a truck collided with the bus.

There are several reports that police have confirmed there are fatalities, however no numbers have been confirmed.

Nipawin RCMP, along with emergency personnel, including the Tisdale Fire Department, are now on scene and are continuing rescue efforts.

"It's bad. It's absolutely awful".

STARS air ambulance has confirmed that they sent two helicopters to the scene. "We will be flying out tomorrow", Michelle Straschnitzki said on Facebook regarding her son.

In a tweet, Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, said he could not imagine what the parents of the players were going through.

Myles Shumlanski, father to one of the Broncos players, arrived at the scene after a call from his son.

"Lots of them are waiting for information", he said. "We ask during this time that you don't send messages". "We had a crane lifting the bus".

"We are shocked and saddened over the tragic news of the accident involving the Humboldt Broncos Junior A hockey club". Players on the team are aged between 16 and 21-years-old.

"From a grieving province, thank you to first responders & medical professionals for courageous response under the most hard circumstances imaginable".

Victims' families were directed to Nipawin Apostolic Church for information and support.

The Swift Current Broncos expressed their condolences.
