On Tuesday, Latvia's second-best ranked lady tennis player Anastasija Sevastova lost to Venus Williams (United States) 6-7, 4-6 in the fourth round of the Indian Wells Premier series tennis tournament, informs LETA.

After beating Zarina Diyas and Kiki Bertens in her first two matches, the third-round encounter against her sibling proved a task too far as Venus ran out a 6-3 6-4 victor.

On Monday, it was the Williams not making a comeback who emerged the victor, 6-3, 6-4 - her first success over Serena since 2014 and only her second in the last nine years. There were several rough stretches early in the first set where you might have thought that it would be easier for Williams to ease out of the match quietly and begin focus on her next tournament.

It was the first meeting between the sisters since they clashed in the 2017 Australian Open final, which Serena won before taking a 15-month hiatus due to her pregnancy.

That triggered ugly scenes, as their father Richard said he was racially abused by fans when Serena then played - and won - the final against Kim Clijsters. The teenager, however, went mentally off the match after a double fault on second serve at 3-3 in the tiebreak.

Now arguably the greatest sibling act in tennis history, Serena, 36, took the court as a new mother while Venus, 37, a new aunt.

Serena Williams should have been given top seeding at Indian Wells on her return from the birth of her daughter, says world number one Simona Halep. Wozniacki blew a 3-0 lead in the first set and was on the run most of the match before losing for the second time this year to the 20-year-old Russian. I definitely don't want to go backwards. "I think it's such a treat for everyone to see this match so early in her comeback", Venus said.

"It's definitely not less disappointing", Serena said.

Wozniacki said the court conditions were hard but she managed to make the adjustments. "My room for improvement is incredible", added Serena.

Halep called for a timeout in the first set so her coach Darren Cahill could come down to the court to discuss strategy. "I had to let it all go and try to win the point, because she wasn't conserving anything, I don't think, either".

Serena eventually won the tiebreak 7-4 to book her place in the semi-final.

After that, the sisters boycotted Indian Wells for 14 years.

There was a loud roar as Serena Williams walked onto the main stadium court at the BNP Paribas Open, wearing a bulky black jacket and black tights.

From the first minute, the match was intense, as both players showed pace and precision as they hit the ball.

Asked if playing Monday brought closure to what happened in 2001, seven-time grand slam champion Venus replied: "It never crossed my mind".
