US Senator Says Trump Likely To Withdraw From Iran Deal

Reuters reported this week that the "E3" powers will propose a fresh round of European Union sanctions on Tehran that keep the 2015 nuclear accord intact while addressing some of Iran's regional activities and ballistic missile work the us believes were emboldened by the deal itself. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said his country would remain in the deal even if the USA withdraws, so long as Iran's interests are protected.

France, Germany and the United Kingdom have proposed new sanctions targeting Iran in an apparent attempt to keep the USA within the 2015 nuclear agreement with Tehran.

Diplomats familiar with the issue told Reuters that the European powers held several rounds of talks with the U.S. on the issue this week.

The State Department doesn't seem to be entirely behind killing it. President Trump appears determined to nix it. At the same time, they're expected to start putting greater stress on Iran's missile development and its destabilizing role in the region.

It's a step that European allies, Iran and other signatories to the deal have said they won't accept, setting up a showdown that Trump seems eager to take on. He added that he didn't believe pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal would have a "detrimental effect" on those talks.

"I don't want to prejudge what kind of mechanisms that we will use to reach an agreement with the Europeans".

The president is considered about the deal's "sunset clauses" as well as about Iran's ballistic missile program. They're readying for a harder turn on Iran after months of watching Trump abide by the agreement and a related USA law, but with clear resentment and impatience after his campaign promises to "rip it up".

In January, Trump said that the E3 - the European powers party to the nuclear deal - has until mid-May to come up with fixes to the agreement.

The importance of the meeting grew especially after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was sacked for several reasons, including his position on Iran and JCPOA. It said they must agree to "fix the bad flaws of the Iran nuclear deal" ― which was sealed under his predecessor Barack Obama ― or he would refuse to extend U.S. sanctions relief on Iran.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said that "such replacements in the USA establishment are not surprising".

Representatives of Iran and other parties, including the US, Britain, Germany, France, China and Russian Federation, launched the latest round of the JCPOA Joint Commission in Vienna on Friday.

Speaking to IRNA, Araqchi acknowledged that the developments of the nuclear file in the next phase "will not be easy", hoping that the meeting of the joint committee will lead to a common understanding "under the current circumstances". It said they are "entitled to adopt additional sanctions against Iran" as long as they are not nuclear-related or were previously lifted under the nuclear agreement.
