President Trump on Tuesday ousted Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State and said he is replacing him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Thanking Mr Tillerson for his service on Twitter, Mr Trump said the new state secretary would do "a fantastic job".

Trump and Tillerson have disagreed again and again since Trump took office, with Tillerson taking the moderate stance on issues from the Paris climate agreement to the Iran deal.

Trump also thanked Tillerson for his service.

Mr Pompeo will replace him at the State Department, and Gina Hapsel - the deputy director at the CIA - will succeed him at the CIA, becoming the first woman to run the spy agency, if confirmed.

A report by the Washington Post said that Tillerson was asked on Friday to step down from his post, which he assumed just over a year ago. "Congratulations to all!" he tweeted.

"His leadership has made America safer and I look forward to representing him and the American people to the rest of the world to further America's prosperity", he said.

The New York Times quoted sources as saying Mr Trump was irritated by Mr Tillerson's body language during meetings. The secretary has generally been cut out of the loop on major foreign policy moves, like Trump's impulsive decision to meet with Kim Jong-un.
