Facebook said it recently gave the page admins a written final warning, but added "they have continued to post content that violates our community standards".

Organizations and people that promote hatred are not allowed a presence on Facebook, according to the social network's Community Standards.

In the latest part of its clean-up exercise, Facebook has removed pages of the far-right, anti-Islamic group Britain First.

Britain First, whose official Facebook page amassed more than 2 million likes before its removal, was reportedly shut down for "repeatedly violating community guidelines, such as sharing videos created to incite hatred against Muslims", the Daily Telegraph writes.

This comes days after Britain First's leaders Paul Golding and Jayda Fransen were jailed after being found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment against Muslims.

Britain First had almost twice as many Facebook likes as the United Kingdom's mainstream Labour Party, which has only one million followers.

In November previous year, the group came to global prominence when Donald Trump retweeted a handful of videos posted on Twitter by Fransen, then Britain First's deputy leader.

Paul Golding and Jayda Fransen, the leader and deputy leader of the groupm, have also had their pages removed, following their conviction for a campaign of harssment during a rape trial.

Britain First had more than two million followers on the platform, significantly more than any of the major political parties in the UK.

'People can express robust and controversial opinions without needing to denigrate others on the basis of who they are'.

"I'm very pleased to welcome the action that Facebook has taken", Prime Minister Theresa May said in parliament, "I hope other companies will follow".

When questioned by MPs at the end of past year, Facebook policy head Simon Milner told the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee that Facebook was "reviewing" the group's page after other social networks such as Twitter and YouTube suspended group accounts.

"Britain First is a vile and hate-fuelled group whose sole goal is to sow division", Khan said in a statement. Still, the ban is more symbolic than it is the beginning of an effective campaign against hate groups.

London's mayor, Sadiq Khan has also issued a statement.

The social media company said the group had repeatedly violated its community standards.
