Dzeko's effort meant Roma were through to the quarter-finals on away goals having lost the first leg in Ukraine 2-1.

Roma progressed into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on the away goals rule as Tuesday's 1-0 victory over 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk at the Stadio Olimpico secured a 2-2 aggregate win.

Any chance of a Shakhtar fightback was effectively doomed by a straight red card to center back Ivan Ordets in the 79th minute.

Roma's versatile Italy worldwide was then centimetres away from scoring an own goal after a Shakhtar free kick.

The Serie A outfit were back in the contest just seven minutes after the restart, however, when the visiting defence was caught out by Kevin Strootman's ball over the top and Dzeko ran through on goal to slot under Pyatov into the back of the net.

"My team played with focus tonight, perhaps without as much quality in the final third, but we knew that sooner or later they would make a mistake and we'd pounce on it", Di Francesco told Mediaset. "I don't have a preferred opponent: they are all strong teams, but we will play to win against anyone".

Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi almost netted an own goal in the 11th minute, but he was lucky to witness his miscued clearance sail inches past the upright.

The home side came out with renewed objective in the second half and Dzeko delighted Roma fans when he broke the deadlock with a trademark clinical finish.

Going down to 10 men left Shakhtar in disarray and their frustration showed when Facundo Ferreyra, who scored in the first leg, plowed into a ball boy on the sideline and the youngster fell backwards over an advertising hoarding.

"We are among the eight best sides in Europe".

Dzeko was given a standing ovation when he was substituted in the final minute.

The hosts then held firm to reach the last eight for the first time in ten years, with Shakhtar failing to register a shot on target in the entire match. "Everyone gave their all and we are deservedly in the quarterfinals", Dzeko said.
