One killed, 20 injured as blast targets police in Raiwind

Nine people, including five policemen, were martyred and 35 others injured when a suicide bomber exploded himself near a check post outside the Tablighi Jamaat Markaz in Raiwind on Wednesday night.

Dr. Haider Ashraf, Lahore police chief, told reporters 10 police personnel were injured, including a senior official.

Initial reports suggested, a motorbike was used in the blast, he said, adding that it could have been the act of a suicide bomber. The injured were shifted to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, Raiwind, where some of them were listed in a critical condition, triggering fears that the death toll might go up. According to the eyewitnesses, the blast was so powerful that it was heard at a long distance.

"The PSL semi-finals will be held in Lahore as per schedule as we have made all security arrangements in this regard", Ashraf said.

Ashraf said numerous wounded were police and three were hospitalized in critical condition.

Police said the blast took place after evening prayers and most members of the religious group had exited into the street, some making purchases nearby.

Pakistan Rangers quick response force has reached the spot and cordoned off the area along with the police.

In a tweet, Punjab province's government "strongly condemned" the attack.

Defunct Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

He also directed to intensify operations of search, sweep, combing and intelligence, while increase security for sensitive installations, educational institutes, places of worships and markets.

This is the first explosion targeting the provincial capital in 2018.
