The Russian Aerospace Forces conducts test launch of a Kinzhal hypersonic aviation and missile system

The Kinzhal system, developed on the basis of the modernized MiG-31 jet, is created to hit land and sea targets at a range of more than 2,000 km without ever entering the enemy's air defense zone, Russian news agency TASS said in a report.

Using colorful graphics and video, Putin said Russian Federation had also tested a nuclear-powered cruise missile and a high-speed underwater drone capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that, he claimed, would be impossible to intercept.

The Russian defence ministry has released dramatic footage of the Kinzhal missile -meaning "dagger" - detaching from a fighter jet before rocketing through the sky.

Putin unveiled the Kinzhal missile earlier in March as one in a new line of nuclear weaponry that could overcome USA defense systems.

The video shows a MiG-31 aircraft carrying a single Kinzhal on its under-fuselage pylons taking off from an airfield in south-western Russian Federation.

Putin said that the country also tested a new heavy intercontinental ballistic missile, called Sarmat, with a range and number of warheads exceeding its predecessor.

"The launch went according to plan, the hypersonic missile hit its target on a testing ground", the ministry said.

In an address to the nation on March 1, Putin had announced a new range of nuclear weapons that he said could hit nearly any point in the world without being intercepted.

He said it was part of a new stockpile of "invincible" weapons that made NATO's US-led missile defence "useless". "And I would just tell you that I saw no change to the Russian military capability and each of these systems (Mr Putin) is taking about that are still years away", he said Monday morning (AEDT).

Putin in his address said Russian Federation is developing missiles and underwater drones, among other weapons, because the US pulled out of the 1972 anti-ballistic missile treaty it had signed with the Soviet Union.
